This is simply what Bryan has seen over the last decade as a personal trainer that has helped hundreds of clients feel more like themselves again.
1. How sitting negatively affects your posture
We all do it. Some more than others, but it negatively affects every one of us, eventually.
Its detriments are well known; it makes you tired, it makes you stiff and sore, and it also makes you die early. I’ve trained clients who, once they get out of bed, sit for breakfast, sit in their car on the way to work, sit all day at work, sit again on the drive home, only to head over to the couch for some well-deserved sitting. Over 90% of their day is spent in a seated position.
Oddly enough, these are the people that come to see me that have the most movement restrictions as well as postural issues.
Remember when you were younger, and your mother said to you: “If you keep making that face, it’s going to stay that way?” Well, she may not have been telling the truth when it came to your face, but when it comes to sitting, that statement definitely has some merit.
Ok, I know what you are thinking: “Well, I had a very long day at work, and I’m tired, so I just want to sit down and relax.” Sitting all day at work is what made you tired in the first place, so why perpetuate the cycle by coming home and sitting again? It is very comfortable to go home and plop onto your couch after dinner and watch mindless TV – but that short term satisfaction comes at a long term price on our bodies.
What I hope to accomplish with this manual is to help get rid of some of the postural imbalances that sitting has caused. Sitting places a lot of the wrong kind of stress on your joints, and over time, your body tries to cope with that constant stress by making you much better at sitting. The only problem now is that when you get up and walk around like people were meant to do, your body isn’t used to it anymore, and it could cause pain. It is an unfortunate effect of our environment. There are people who live too far away from work, so walking is not an option. There are others who attend meetings all day, or who work in a setting where standing all day is not an option.
If you have that nagging hip pain that just won’t go away, or lingering knee pain that you didn’t have a few years ago, or even something like sciatic nerve pain, these could all be products of sitting. I’m not saying these exercises are going to cure you. I haven’t assessed your movements personally, but from my own trial and error of doing this for a number of years, they are a great place to start for someone who doesn’t know where to start. The exercises in this book are gentle enough for almost everyone, and can progress in difficulty for people who are relatively active, and require more of a challenge.
